About LanePilates When Blake Lane moved to New York City in 1997, to pursue a career in the Fashion Industry, she never imagined that her road in life would take her to become a pilates instructor. Diagnosed at a young age with acute scoliosis, Blake understood early on the positive effects that physical strength, conditioning and healthy eating can have on the mind and body. While working at Tommy Hilfiger, Blake started taking pilates in a private studio in the West Village, which was taught by an instructor who focused on breath control and proper alignment. After spending 10 + years working in fashion and training in pilates, Blake decided to switch careers and began studying pilates to become a certified instructor. Always one to be creative and highly motivated, Blake has developed her own unique approach to teaching pilates which has been incredibly well received for its upbeat, refreshingly hip approach without losing sight of the origin of pilates; strength and stability. Blake received her Power Pilates/Comprehensive Certification in August 2010 and was trained under the guidance of Bob Liekens and the Power Pilates team in both NYC and Westchester County New York. The Power Pilates method promotes a classical, systematic, integrative approach to pilates training focusing on stability, strength, stamina and stretch. Her workouts follow the Power Pilates program honoring the integrity of the method of Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates Method In the early 1900s, Joseph Pilates developed a workout technique based on a series of controlled, precise movements to aid in strengthening and stretching muscles. The technique, which came to be known as The Pilates Method, is today practiced by over eleven million people worldwide. Followers of the regimen concentrate on seven principles: proper alignment, control, concentration, centering, breathing, precision, and flowing movement. Pilates exercises focus on both stabilizing the body's core by working the muscles surrounding the spine, and nurturing communication between mind and body. Through exercising intelligently—not forcefully—Pilates students can achieve improved posture; a sleek, toned physique; and a new comprehension of how to make their bodies function at peak performance all the time. Pilates is beneficial for people of all ages and levels of ability. It can be safely practiced by those with injuries and pregnant women. Pilates mat classes are usually done in a group setting and almost completely done on the floor. In the mat exercises your strength is developed by working against gravity while on the apparatus you are either working with or against the resistance of springs depending on your needs. The mat exercises usually are done without any props but balls, bands or magic circles can be introduced to challenge or assist your workout. Working on the apparatus gives a very different feeling and can be beneficial to both the elite athlete and people with injuries. One of the most important concepts in Pilates is stability and working on the apparatus creates a strong and stable core quickly and with advancement in the exercises - challenges your stability. The Pilates apparatus uses spring resistance creating a longer, leaner body with a strong center.
